What is the VA Aid and Attendance Benefit?

VA Aid and Attendance is a monthly pension benefit that provides tax-free payments to veterans who served during a specified wartime period to help pay for Long Term Care. In addition to being available for Veterans, single surviving spouses are also eligible for this benefit. This pension allows you to pay for care wherever you receive it, at home, adult day care, Assisted Living or Skilled Nursing. This entitlement benefit was established in 1952 under Title 38 USC.

Who Is Eligible?

Are you unsure of your eligibility status? Many other Texans also struggle to identify whether or not they qualify for veteran benefits. Our team identified a few eligibility qualifications below:

  • Service specifications: Veterans earned honorable discharge and served for 90 consecutive days, with one of those days during a time of war may qualify.
  • Medical assistance and services: You or your loved one requires hands on assistance for two activities of daily living: eating, dressing, toileting, bathing OR has cognitive impairment.
  • Total assets: Your annual income combined with your current countable assets meet or fall below a certain amount of money. Your exempt assets only include a house on a property no larger than two acres, a burial plan, and one car.
  • Financial obligations vs. income: To qualify your care expenses, including health care premiums, personal care and/or facility costs must equal or exceed your total income.
