How to Enroll for Medicare Part D Plans

Save Money…Compare Medicare Drug Plans for Next Year

Medicare Part D Drug Plans change each year including the premium, deductible, co-pays and most importantly, how each drug is categorized by “tier,” i.e., preferred generic, non-preferred generic, preferred brand name, etc. can change.

There are 24 drug plans in Texas in 2018. It only takes 5 minutes to see how much you might save by switching.

The enrollment window to change plans runs from October 15th to December 7th each year.

  • Go to, and click the green button “Find health and drug Plans.”

  • Enter your Zip code and click “Find Plans.”

  • Sometimes the site will ask you to confirm your county.

  • Answer two simple questions: How do you get your Medicare coverage - Original Medicare, and Do you get help from Medicare or your State: I don’t get any extra help.

  • Click “Continue to plan results.”

  • The next page lets you build or retrieve a drug list from a prior year.

  • To build a drug list, simply enter the first few characters of a drug’s name.

  • The website will list all of the drugs beginning with those characters.

  • Select your drug, enter the dosage and how frequently you take the drug.

  • Repeat this process until your list is complete.

  • The website stores the list and assigns it a 10 digit ID number for retrieval next year.

  • Click “My drug list is complete.”

  • On the next page you pick a retail pharmacy.

  • You can expand the area around your Zip code to see all pharmacies.

  • Click “Continue to plan results.”

  • The next page refines your plan results, simply check the “Compare drug plans with Original Medicare” box and click “Continue to plan results.”

  • The top of the next page shows what you would pay if you have don’t have a drug plan.

  • Below that is a ranking of plans by Annual Cost (refer to the left most column).

  • As you scroll down the list of plans you’ll notice that the annual cost increases. Don’t be concerned by plan premiums, deductibles and co-pays, because the Annual Cost shown in the left column is your total out of pocket for the year.

  • If your current plan is at the top of the list and you’re happy with it, you don’t have to do anything. If the plan at the top of the list will save you money, click on the “Enroll” button in the right column. Enrolling in a new plan for the following year automatically dis-enrolls you from your current plan at the end of the year.

One final thought, each plan has a Star Rating from 1 to 5, an indication of customer satisfaction with the plan. If the plan you want has 2-1/2 or more stars, enroll. If the plan only has 1 or 2 stars, drop down the list to select a plan.  If you get stuck or confused, call us for help.
